Aboriginal spirituality entails a close relationship
between humans and the land. Aborigines call the beginning of the
world the "Dreaming," or "Dreamtime." In the
"Dreamtime," aboriginal "Ancestors" rose from
below the earth to form various parts of nature including animal
species, bodies of water, and the sky.
The form and expression of spirituality differs between Aboriginal
people and Torres Strait Islanders. Aboriginal spirituality mainly
derives from the stories of the Dreaming, while Torres Strait Islander
spirituality draws upon the stories of the Tagai.
The Dreaming has different meanings for different Aboriginal people.
It is a complex network of knowledge, faith and practices that derive
from stories of creation, and which dominates all spiritual and
physical aspects of Aboriginal life.
The Dreaming sets out the structures of society, the rules for social
behaviour and the ceremonies performed in order to maintain the
life of the land. Each story belongs to a long complex story.
Aboriginal people attribute their origins and occupation of Australia
to their ancestors and spirit beings of their particular family
groups, distinct to a particular area of land. These stories translate
theories of occupation to their close relationship with the land.
This has often been expressed by Aboriginal people when describing
the land as my Mother.
